| Hey ppl! im a 15 yr old girl and i just recently started playing netball again. Our first game we lost and the other team had ALOT of very good skills. I usually play centre but i also play WA aswell. Im no good in any positions ad wouldnt exactky call myself great at centre either. | I have played netball since I was 10yrs old and have always believed that you cannot throw over a third from anywhere on the netball court , not just over two visual red lines or from the back line in ,so you should not be able to throw the ball from the half way all the way to thejust before the back line so the GS can be able to shoot . |

This years trip to sunny Brean Sands on the Somerset coast had us all wondering why we attempt to play half decent netball after a long night on the bottle, but once again we ventured out on court at 8am after 3 hours sleep and tried our best to catch the ball. This year was exceptional for me though. As I fumbled to put on my tracksuit after another dismal display I happened upon a large crowd gathering around court 1, surely it wasn?t the final already? Little did I know I was about to witness the misunderstood game of mixed netball.
Now, Ive always turned my nose up at men playing netball. Don?t get me wrong, im not being sexist, Ive just always thought that they would be clumsy and far to eager to turn our beautiful game into a contact sport. What I saw inspired me to write this piece.
The team getting all the attention are known as TDC, a small family based club from Birmingham. They are fronted by a towering GA who plays up to the crowd at every opportunity with his one two passing back and forth to his team mates lining the edge of the circle. The play is a joy to behold but it soon becomes apparent that not everyone is enjoying this team winning as much as I am.
Im instantly hooked and decide to find out more.
The games pass and the anticipation grows until the team in white start warming up. The whisper spreads through the teams that TDC are about to take to the court.
At first glance Im wondering what is so special about this team? They play with 3 males instead of the 4 allowed and bar the GA none of them can be more than 5ft 8 tall. What I didn?t know was these are the most under rated players in the tournament. The only time they give the ball to the opposition is when they?ve scored a goal.
The GS is an unassuming lady who plays with the stealth of a leopard, drawing the defence away and opening up a gap big enough for a bus to park under the net.
The WA is a guy who plays with grace and speed, delivering the right pass at the right time.
The C is a hard hitting female (the only C in the tournament to be female in fact). She covers the entire court effortlessly and never rushes a pass showing the men a masterclass in C play, controlling the pace of the game from the outset.
The WD is another girl with speed and presence, always supporting the C and linking with the WA.
Then theres the girl at GD who makes the opposing GA wish he hadn?t left the circle as she wont let him back in with some fine tactical blocking.
Finally theres the GK, surely the shortest guy in the tournament who must stand at no more than 5ft 7. This guy jumps like he?s 6ft 7, coming out of nowhere to pluck the ball from the air.
TDC glide around the court displaying the true meaning of the word team. Im convinced they?ve rehearsed their plays as they make passes into places before the recipient has got there. To my disbelief Im told they don?t play regularly together and it?s the first time they?ve been together since last years Pontins tournament.
The crowd cheer as the umpire makes a call against TDC and the air is filled with what can only be described as envy and awe. TDC relish in it and plug away like a machine feeding the big GA who scores with unnerving accuracy. Why don?t they double team this colossus you may ask? The answer was given in the second half as they tried exactly that, only to find that the outstanding GS cant miss a shot either.
If ever you needed an advert for mixed netball that was the day. I spared some of my time and now Im hooked. I will be looking for a team to play on in next years tournament. Oh, and in case you were wondering, they won the game 19 ? 0 completely shutting out the opposition. I watched the following day as they were knocked out in the semi-final by the Mixed Netball Associations Allstars team by 3 goals to the delight of the surrounding 6 deep crowd, which indicates the standard of play being so high with better teams (even if not so entertaining) than TDC playing at a high pace with high accuracy.
Mixed netball has come a long way since the days of basketballers trying to stop themselves running on court and I, for one, welcome more men into the sport. So check it out next time and never underestimate the unknown.

I was wondering how i can play both sports and not get the rules mixed up.
